Year-round comfort for an open-plan extension in Bramhall

The problem

The homeowner's extension houses a large open-plan kitchen and living area. It had become the least comfortable part of the house: cold in winter and uncomfortably warm in summer. Big open-plan rooms are often the hardest to keep at a steady temperature, because there's a lot of air to heat or cool.

The system

We fitted a single Mitsubishi Electric MSZ-LN 5 kW wall unit from the premium LN range, sized for the open-plan space. It's a heat pump, so the one unit covers both problems: 6.0 kW of heating through the winter and 5.0 kW of cooling in summer.

The LN range carries Mitsubishi's 3D i-see sensor, which scans the room and detects movement. It adjusts the airflow and output according to whether the room is occupied and where people are, so it isn't working flat out to condition an empty kitchen. In a large open-plan space used at different times of day, that makes a real difference.

The 5 kW MSZ-LN is rated A+++ for cooling and A++ for heating (SEER 8.5, SCOP 4.6). The full specification is in the MSZ-LN product information sheet.

The installation

The whole system was installed in a single day. Inside, the unit sits high and central on the wall between the two stained-glass windows.

Outside, the outdoor unit is wall-mounted on brackets at the back of the building, and the pipework runs in neat trunking tucked away round the back of the building.

The system was commissioned by Cheshire Climate Solutions Ltd, a Refcom F-Gas certified company (certificate REF1023295), and comes with our 2-year labour warranty alongside Mitsubishi Electric's manufacturer cover.
