The size of the unit is set by the room, not your budget — a 2.5 kW unit suits a typical bedroom, while a large open-plan kitchen-diner may need 5 kW or more. The pipe run between indoor and outdoor units matters: a bedroom directly above the patio is straightforward, a run through three floors is not. Where the outdoor unit goes affects access and mounting — ground level on a slab is simplest, a first-floor wall bracket needs more work.
Multi-room systems change the maths. Running several indoor units from one outdoor unit takes up far less space outside, with one condenser and one set of pipe runs. On price it depends on what you compare: multi-split ranges start higher than the most basic single-split units, so budget separate systems can work out cheaper per room, while against like-for-like models the multi-split usually comes out ahead. Two separate warranties apply to every system we fit — the manufacturer's on the equipment, and ours on the workmanship.
Manufacturer cover is parts only and is granted under the manufacturer's own terms and at their discretion. Those terms expect the system to have been installed by a certified engineer, and some ask for evidence that it has been maintained, so keep your paperwork. Terms vary by brand and range — we'll tell you what yours asks for, and when a service is actually worth booking.
On top of that, we give a two-year labour warranty on every system we install, whichever brand you choose. It covers our own workmanship, and it also covers the labour involved in fitting any part supplied under the manufacturer's warranty. That second part matters: manufacturer cover pays for the component, not the engineer's time to fit it, so for your first two years a parts claim doesn't leave you with a labour bill.
In practice, claims are rare. Installed correctly, units from the major manufacturers are built to run for years without trouble — which is exactly why we only fit Samsung, Mitsubishi Electric, Hitachi and Fujitsu. We won't put in equipment we don't trust to keep working. The warranties matter all the same: on the rare occasion something does go wrong, you want the cover to be there.
Warranty periods can change, and they vary between ranges within a brand. We confirm the exact warranty terms for the specific unit you're having on your quotation, before any works are scheduled — so you know precisely what you're covered for before you commit to anything.

For most houses in England, a single outdoor unit is permitted development provided it meets the conditions — siting, size and noise limits among them. It's more likely to need permission if you live in a flat, a listed building, or a conservation area, or if the unit would sit on a wall facing a highway. We'll flag it at survey if we think your property is affected, and we'd always rather raise it early than after the fact. Check with your local planning department if you're unsure.
Yes. Modern units are air-to-air heat pumps — they heat as well as cool, and keep working well below freezing. Because they move heat rather than generate it, they typically deliver around three times more heat than the electricity they consume, which usually makes them cheaper to run than electric panel heaters or bottled gas.
Far less than most people expect. A modern inverter unit only draws full power while pulling the room to temperature, then throttles right back. Look at the SEER and SCOP figures on the manufacturer brochures — higher is better, and the difference between an A++ and A+++ unit shows up on your bill over the years.
A single-room system is usually a one-day job. Multi-room systems take two to three days depending on how many indoor units and how far the pipework runs. We'll give you a realistic timescale with the quote, not an optimistic one.

Yes — annually is the sensible interval. A serviced system runs more efficiently, lasts longer and stays cleaner. Most manufacturer warranties also require regular servicing to remain valid, so skipping it can quietly cost you your cover. See servicing and repairs for what's involved.

Samsung WindFree suits bedrooms where a draught would bother you; Mitsubishi's MSZ-LN is the one to look at if appearance matters most. Yes to all three. Flats usually need freeholder or management-company consent for the outdoor unit. Park homes and static caravans need a slightly different approach, which we've set out in detail on the park homes page. Garden rooms and loft conversions are among the most common jobs we do.
