Putting right a DIY air conditioning install in Disley

A conservatory with a new solid roof, and a system the homeowner had fitted himself to keep his dog cool. We decommissioned the old kit safely, recovered the refrigerant properly, and replaced it with a Samsung 3.5 kW Luzon with every pipe and cable hidden in trunking.

The replacement: a Samsung Luzon sited centrally in the room, with every pipe and cable concealed in trunking that follows the lines of the wall. With the old pipework gone and the new system in, the wall can now be made good and decorated.

The background

The conservatory had recently had a new solid roof fitted. Conservatories are hard rooms to keep comfortable at the best of times, and this one got hot enough to be a problem — not least for the family dog, who had no way of getting out of the heat while the house was empty.

The homeowner had already tried to solve it himself, fitting an air conditioning system to the conservatory wall. It ran, but as the photo shows, the installation itself left a lot to be desired.

We completely understand why he did it. The dog was unwell, and the illness made the heat far harder to cope with. That isn't a situation anyone wants to sit and wait on, so he put something in himself to get the room cool quickly. A short-term fix, and a case of needs must.

Why this isn't a DIY job

Installing a split system means handling refrigerant, and in the UK that is legally restricted work — it has to be carried out by an F-Gas certified engineer. Refrigerant is a fluorinated greenhouse gas, and releasing it to the air is an offence.

There's a practical side too. Pipework that isn't properly supported, joints left exposed and power taken from an extension lead are not just untidy: they're the things that cause leaks, nuisance trips and early failures. A system that looks like it works can still be quietly losing gas and working the compressor far harder than it should.

We see this more often than you'd think, and we're not here to make anyone feel daft about it — particularly when it was done for a good reason. The job is simply to turn a short-term fix into something safe, legal and permanent.

Decommissioning the old system

The first job was removing the old kit without venting anything to atmosphere. We pumped the refrigerant down into the outdoor unit and locked it in there, so the charge stayed safely contained while the system was disconnected and taken away.

The new system

In its place we fitted a Samsung 3.5 kW Luzon, sized for the room and positioned centrally so the air reaches the whole space rather than one end of it. Like the rest of Samsung's range from Luzon upwards, it has Wi-Fi control built in, so the room can be cooled before anyone — or any dog — needs it.

All of the pipework and cabling is concealed in trunking, run to follow the lines of the archway and the skirting rather than cutting across the wall. Being a heat pump, it also heats the conservatory in winter, which makes the room usable all year rather than just in summer.

The work was carried out by Cheshire Climate Solutions Ltd, a Refcom F-Gas certified company (certificate REF1023295), and comes with our 2-year labour warranty alongside Samsung's manufacturer parts warranty.

Thinking of fitting one yourself?

Pre-charged "DIY" kits are sold freely, but the moment refrigerant is involved the work is legally restricted, and a poor install can cost more to put right than having it done properly first time. We're happy to look at an existing system and tell you straight what it needs. See servicing and repairs, home air conditioning, or send us a photo.
