Seven systems for porta cabin offices at a Buxton haulage yard

A haulage company moving into a new yard had a run of porta cabins as its offices. Instead of one multi-split with long pipe runs, we fitted seven individual Hitachi systems, each sized to its own room. Three days on site, and the offices are now warm in winter and cool in summer.

The brief

The company got in touch while moving to a new yard. The new offices were a run of porta cabins, and they needed them usable all year round.

Cabin offices are harder to keep comfortable than a brick building. Light walls and a steel shell mean they heat up quickly in summer and lose heat just as fast in winter, so staff end up either sweltering or sat in coats. For a working office that's a daily problem, not an occasional one.

Why seven separate systems, not one multi-split

A multi-split would have run every office from one outdoor unit. On a site like this it would also have meant long pipe runs from one end of the cabin run to the other.

So we went the other way: seven individual systems, each with its own outdoor unit sat next to the cabin it serves. The pipe runs stay short, each office is independent of the others, and if one system ever needs attention the rest of the offices carry on as normal.

Sizing each room on its own

Every room was measured and sized separately, giving a mix of 2.5 kW and 3.5 kW Hitachi units rather than one size throughout. Five are at ground level and two serve the offices upstairs.

The main office got two 2.5 kW units instead of a single 5 kW one. The capacity is the same, but splitting it across two units spreads the air far more evenly across a long room, instead of one unit blowing hard at one end. It's more comfortable to sit in, and neither unit has to work as hard to hold the temperature.

The rest went to the accounts and sales offices, the director's office and the canteen, so the whole operation is covered rather than just the rooms that shout loudest.

The result

The work was completed over three days, with the outdoor units lined up along the cabins and the pipework run neatly into each one.

Because these are heat pumps, the same systems heat the offices through winter and cool them through summer — which matters more in cabin offices than almost anywhere else, given how quickly they swing from one extreme to the other.

The installation was carried out by Cheshire Climate Solutions Ltd, a Refcom F-Gas certified company (certificate REF1023295), and carries our 2-year labour warranty alongside Hitachi's manufacturer parts warranty.

Cabins, units and site offices

Porta cabins, modular buildings and site offices are some of the most uncomfortable places to work in a cold snap or a heatwave, and some of the easiest to put right.
